Impact through Photography

I have been mentioning a lot about the arts and media and how that platform can be used to bring transformation. Sometimes it is hard to believe it or even see it when we are limited in our scope or interactions with people who are trying to make a difference in this field.

I want to give a shout out to Kenny Kim who is going full steam ahead into this field. It seems like God is opening up great opportunities for him to use his talents and passions to build up God’s Kingdom. There are many people who can “just” take pictures but you need a special eye for capturing certain moments that come and go… Kenny has that eye. His work is pretty inspiring.

He is usually a frequently requested photographer for weddings, but now he is also taking pictures for various top-notched events. Check out his website to look at some of his portfolio. Also, check out his Xanga page for some of the pictures at a Hillsong United concert. You got to love the ALL ACCESS passes.

It is my dream to have a good photographer who will travel with me in my various trips and just photo-journal all the things that God is doing around the world.

The Gospel in Spiderman 3

Christina and I were able to spend some time together yesterday. After a quiet dinner alone (someone was gracious enough to watch the kids for us), we watched Spiderman 3 on the IMAX theater.

The movie was “just ok” (sorry Spidey fans). But one thing that I have been saying for some time now is that there are glimpses of the Gospel in many of the movies out there, especially some of the greatest and classic movies.

I was surprised to see so many of the Christian principles in this movie. The topics of forgiveness, community, sacrifice, overcoming evil, struggling with our dual nature, temptation and the list goes on. I don’t know if the producer of this movie is a Christian or not, but one thing we can conclude is that these topics are what we call “a universal topics that speak a universal language.” In every culture, the topics of forgiveness, love and sacrifice are things that speak to every human heart.

Movies are a great way to introduce the Gospel… we just have to be more Gospel-conscious as we watch movies in the pop culture. I am also praying that God will raise up more Christ-followers who will start producing some top quality movies for God’s glory.

One principle that Peter Parker reiterated at the end of the movie that I espouse quite often is:

“Whatever comes our way, whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice. My friend Harry taught me that. He chose to be the best of himself. It’s the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose to do what’s right.”

Our decisions determine our destiny.
