Captivate Us. Devastate Us.

This song has been on repeat throughout the day. There are times when a song has a way of ministering to you at just the right time. Usually, it is a combination of the song’s words and the situation you are facing at the moment.

Your face is beautiful
And Your eyes are like the stars
Your gentle hands have healing
There inside the scars
Your loving arms they draw me near
And Your smile it brings me peace
Draw me closer oh my Lord
Draw me closer Lord to Thee
Captivate us, Lord Jesus
Set our eyes on You
Devastate us with Your presence
Falling down
And rushing river, draw us nearer
Holy fountain consume us with You
Captivate us Lord Jesus, with You
Your voice is powerful
And Your words are radiant bright
In Your breath and shadow
I will come close and abide
You whisper love and life divine
And Your fellowship is free
Draw me closer O my Lord
Draw me closer Lord to Thee
Let everything be lost in the shadows
Of the light of Your face
Let every chain be broken from me
As I’m bound in Your grace
For Your yoke is easy, Your burden is light
You’re full of wisdom, power and might
And every eye will see You

Diversity in the Body of Christ

There is something very beautiful about blending in various styles of music together. Not only does it give a fresh flavor to the song, but it highlights the uniqueness of the different styles. I have always been a Gospel Choir lover. I still remember my first Gospel Choir concert that I attended when I was in college. It gave me goosebumps as they were singing songs with so much passion, rhythm and soul.

In many ways, it is similar in the Body of Christ. When people with different personalities, talents and gifts come together, beautiful music is created. When everyone is in sync, it glorifies God. I am praying that churches in a region or a city is able to understand this. No two churches are exactly alike. This is why we need to learn how to appreciate and honor different churches in our area.

When we are able to come together in unity, the world will be able to hear God’s melodies; and there is a good possibility that they might even like it.

This is one of my favorite U2 songs, but the song was elevated even higher with the Harlem Gospel Choir step into the picture.

God always has a way of taking something that is familiar and giving it a fresh perspective. The Cambodian church that we visited on Sunday was singing the song, “I Can Sing of Your Love Forever.” I think I sang that song hundreds of times, but for some reason, when I heard it sung in Khmei and the people who have been rescued from sex slavery started to sing, it wrecked me.

It was at that moment, I realized (again) how a song is powerful not only because of the words and the music, but because of what it means to the person who is singing it. This is why worship is always a good indication of what is going on in a person’s heart.

Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing of
Of when Your love came down

I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever

Oh I feel like dancing
It’s foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
They will dance with joy
Like they’re dancing now

We arrived safely in Phnom Penh on Thursday morning. Then we spend the afternoon walking around the city and observing everything that was happening around us. In the evening we did some investigative filming. It was truly eye-opening.

Then on Friday we spent the whole working with a ministry. It was a phenomenal place filled with incredible people. Even though it has only been 2 days in Cambodia, God is speaking powerfully to us. We are truly grateful and humbled by what we are seeing here.

Persona Series

We started a new series called, “Persona” this past Friday at Access, our gathering for college students. The dictionary defines, “persona” as, “a person’s perceived or evident personality, as that of a well-known official, actor, or celebrity,” “personal image or public role”. We all know how our public image does not always match up with our personal/private image. This is why we all struggle with issues of hypocrisy, authenticity and honesty.

As we started the night, it was exciting for two reasons: 1) The gathering place was packed and filled with students who were hungry for God; 2) Diana, one of our staff members, under HMCC’s pastoral covering, shared God’s Word.

I can’t wait until we can get the message online so that people can listen to it. Even though this was her first time, God used Diana powerfully as she shared God’s heart about authenticity and honesty. She set the example of being brutally honesty and vulnerable by sharing from her own personal life. I am praying that God will raise up more college students with character of honesty and authenticity.

As I have said many times before, “Our CHARACTER is the CONTAINER that CARRIES our CONVICTIONS.” If our convictions and dreams are big, then we need a bigger container. So let’s get busy building up our character for Christ.

Commitment Until Death

Whenever I see or read stories about couples who have been married for a long time and how they are still in love, it inspires me. Many people do not fully understand the level of commitment that is required when they say their wedding vows on their wedding day. For some people, it is just a formality. For others, they genuinely say it, but do not know the fully extent of what is required.

When things are good, everyone is happy. But when things are bad, it challenges the commitment that was made on the wedding day.

With each passing year, I am humbled to know that my wife, Christina made that commitment to me. Through all the ups and downs, she has remained a steady rock in my life. I am inspired.

This video shares a little bit of my heart for the woman I said, “I do” to in front of God, our families and our friends.

Inside Out Series

Often times, change comes from the inside out. It is a work that God sovereignly does in our hearts. But a part of the change process requires our responsibility to faithfully exercise the spiritual disciplines. It is not a matter of legalism, but rather it is an issue of obedience. God designed things in such a way that when we cooperate with Him and do our part, He will bring forth His transformative work in our lives.

We want to start off the 2013 year on the right foot.

As we participate in practicing godly habits, God will use our obedience to bring forth changes from the inside out. This coming Sunday we are starting a new 2-part series called, “Inside Out” where we will examine “inner” spiritual disciplines as well as “outer” spiritual disciplines.

God is weaving a beautiful tapestry from the messiness of our lives; but it will have to start from obediently seeking His face from the inside out.

Join us in the journey!

Legendary Series

We are in a desperate need for heroes. In our generation, we haven’t seen many people rise up who have the testimonies and the witnesses of Christ-followers who have journeyed before us. With every generation that passes, we lose sight of these great men and women of faith.

In this new Access series, we want to dig up some of these “legendary” people who have made a difference in history. Journey with us as we try to get inspired and impacted by their stories. We will be looking at their testimonies, trials, and triumph.

It is my prayer that God will raise up a new generation of people who will leave their mark in history for the glory of God!

A Father’s Influence

Author: sethskim  |  Category: Values, Viewpoint

Recently, Christina and I have been talking a lot about the father’s influence in a daughter’s life. Part of the reason for our discussion is because Christina has been reading, Bringing Up Girls by James Dobson. She has been giving me various summaries with different highlights after each chapter.

The more I see my sweatpea, Karissa growing up so quickly, the more I sense the need for my affirmation and presence in her life. The journey that Karissa is on will be filled with a lot of obstacles and bumps along the way. I want to make sure that I am there each step of the way.

I know that one day I will have to give her away to another man to lead her and guide her (I am trying to pray that I won’t beat up on that guy). But until that time, I need to do my best to make a difference in her life.

When I saw this video of a woman who was not able to have her Daddy-Daughter Dance because her father passed away before the wedding day, it broke my heart. It also reminded me of the power of a father’s influence. There are so many women in this world that grew up without a positive relationship with their fathers and it is affecting them even till this day.

This is why when I saw what these guys did for the bride, it was so powerful.

Asia Trip 2013 Recap

Christina and I just wanted to say thanks to all of you in Asia. We experienced tremendous love from you guys in the way you served us and honored us. It was a great privilege reconnecting with all our old friends and also, making new friends along the way. I told Christina that we should try to share a few words via video as a way of appreciating all of you.

We are grateful for all the blessings that God poured out on us at the HMCC of Singapore retreat and the HMCC of Jakarta retreat. You guys inspired us! Let’s continue to run the race with perseverance as we fix our eyes on Jesus.

It is and it will always be all about Jesus!

Joining the Movement

My journey started back in 2005 when I went to India. It was the first time where the realities of the sex slavery industry were brought to my attention. After hearing the stories of so many women and children who were enslaved, it broke my heart. Some of the girls were as young as 12 years old and they belonged to brothels in the heart of Mumbai’s redlight district.

The clincher for me was when I was asked to pray for a lady who was dying of AIDS-HIV. I still remember very vividly the room where the lady was lying on her bed in her frail condition. It was hard to pray knowing that this woman was given a few more weeks to live. I had to ask God for greater faith.

I ended up going back to India in 2006 and God kept on putting this issue of human slavery in my heart.

After I came back from India, life got busy and the convictions that God placed on my heart were put on the backburner.

However, God would not let me forget or let me off the hook. More recently, God used the film Nefarious to speak to Christina and me. At the end of the movie, we felt compelled to pray. We asked God to give us (our family and our church) His marching orders.

Since then, lots have happened.

We gathered a handful of people and started a launch team for the Liberty Mission movement. We highlighted the human slavery issue on December 2nd by dedicating a whole Sunday Celebration to bring greater awareness to our church. It was also the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery; therefore it was exciting to know that we were united with other organizations to bring attention to this issue.

In January 2013, we are going to have a call out meeting for everyone in our church who is passionate about getting involved. We will be forming various teams to get things rolling and put things into action. There are also a few immersion and learning trips in the works so that we can give people first-hand exposure to what is going on around the world.

This issue is massive and there is no one person or one church/organization that can tackle this alone. This is why we are going to just be faithful to our small part in the greater movement of God, while at the same time link up with other groups that are united in the common vision. Please join us in making a dent in Satan’s territory.

Laying Down Your Life

Author: sethskim  |  Category: Values, Various, Viewpoint

One of my passions is raising up godly men, who will set the example of being like Christ in all that they do, especially in the area of opposite-sex relationships.

In a world where chivalry has been lost, I am trying to help men become the kind of husbands that the Apostle Paul describes in Ephesians 5:25-33. But it is not easy because it does not come naturally for us to be like Christ. It takes training and constant reinforcement.

If, at a young age, we learn the principles of honoring, respecting, serving, and protecting women, then we will be able to live it out as we get older.

This is why I was moved by this video. It demonstrates perfectly what it means to lay down your life for someone you care about. I pray that all the men in HMCC will have this kind of heart and sacrificial attitude towards the women in our lives.

This is definitely a requirement for any guy who wants to marry Karissa! :-)
