Missing Mommy

It was a great reunion when Christina and Josiah came back from Indianapolis. The kids really missed their mommy and believe it or not, they missed their brother.

I realized how important stability is in a home.

There were many times within the last couple of days, where KiKi would sometimes wonder and ask where mommy was or what mommy was doing. After the multiple reminders and trying to fill in that role of “mommy,” I realized that just have both parents in the home was what KiKi wanted.

I am constantly amazed at the things that Christina is able to do when I am away. Even though Christina plays a big role in our home, she even mentions that it is not the same when I am not at home.

I just don’t know how single parents do it. I have greater respect for them in trying to raise their children on their own.

Now, we are back to normalcy – no more staying up late, eating out, running around, leaving stuff on the ground, and etc. – mommy is back.

Playing Mr. Mom

For the next few days I will be playing the role of Mr. Mom. Christina went to Indianapolis with Josiah for his premiere league soccer tournament, so I am at home with Elliot and KiKi.

Christina and I are realizing that Josiah’s soccer is going to take some major commitments, as he will be traveling to different states throughout his season. I wish I can be there, but for some reason the tournaments and church responsibilities are always conflicting, but I a looking forward to spending some extra time with Elliot and KiKi.

We have already worked out a rough schedule for the next two day. I am looking forward to it.

Fireproof Your Marriage

Fireproof.jpg

Tonight our LIFE Group did an activity together. We decided to watch the new Fireproof movie. Since we are a married couples group and the movie was about a marriage, we thought it would be a good idea to see it.

This movie was made by the same church that made the Facing the Giants movie. Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia has caught the eye of many people in Hollywood. It is quite remarkable that one church can produce a movie on such a low budget.

Even though parts of the Fireproof movie was a bit cheesy and it was very clear that they wanted to present the Gospel, I think overall the message in the movie was good and powerful. I think all of our married couples were in tears... but for the guys, we had some "misty" eyes.

Whenever a movie speaks to the pain and the felt needs of people then there is an instant connection. I hope that this movie can even inspire some failing marriages to persevere.

Conclusion of “Our Journey” Series

20080928 - Our Journey.jpg

Tomorrow, we will be concluding our Sunday Sermon series called, “Our Journey.” It has been helpful to look at the life of Moses and see how God was authoring the salvation story through a man who had his fair share of weaknesses. But isn’t this the testimony of so many people, not only in the Bible but also in our world today.

This has been a good series, not only in terms of the joy in preaching this series, but also to see the response of the people. It has really been a timely series for our church members. Especially, since many are struggling to see God’s Sovereignty in their lives.

By looking at Moses’ life from a panoramic view, it has helped us in looking at our lives from the bigger perspective. We talked about how God “connects our past” and helps us “confront our obstacles.” Tomorrow I am going to conclude by talking about the “challenges of the unknown.”

There is something about the unknown that causes a lot of fear and produces insecurity in a person’s life. But tomorrow, we will be reminded of God’s Presence that is already going ahead of us into the future and also that is with us as we move into the unknowns.

It just all comes down to the issue of faith and trust – what else is new?

2008 H-Games

H-Games 2008.jpg

Tomorrow we are going to have our annual H-Games as a whole church. This is one event that all the different lifestages come together for. I enjoy it because this is where we can have some great fellowship and fun together as a church.

It is interesting to see some of the college student peeking over at the married couples and families. I don’t know what goes through their minds, but I am guessing that they think the older folks in our church are too old for the competition. But as I have been sharing, it is not so much about the youth but more of the wisdom (knowing when to run).

For the last several years, the single adults in our church have won the championship trophy. The married couples LIFE Groups have at least placed in the top 3 in different years. But this year, the college students are pretty pumped to put the older people in our place.

We shall see… it will be an epic battle. We will take no prisoners.

Heroes T.V. Series

Heroes TV-Villains.png

I have never watched a single episode of Heroes, until tonight. Today was the big premiere of season three. Christina has always been a fan of this T.V. series; therefore I decided to join her tonight. I would always hear about how good this series is from her and other people, but I was never pulled in to watching the show.

With all the hype, I watched tonight’s 2-part series with great anticipation.

Conclusion: I like the drama but I am not much of a sci-fi kind of guy.

But we will see… if Christina likes it, then I can try to like it because it gives me more time with her.

Ear Piercing

My baby girl got her ears pierced today. Awhile back we asked Karissa what she wanted for her birthday and without hesitation she said, “I want my ears pierced!” So after talking it through with Christina, we decided to go for it.

The “recommended” time for kids to get their ears pierced vary, but people have said 5 years old should be fine. KiKi was a brave little girl as she endured the gun that pierced the earring through her ear… ouch!

In fact, as I was watching KiKi get her ears pierced, I was talking it over with Christina about getting my ears pierced. She was all for it, but then I started to think about the bling that I would need to invest in and the thought quickly faded.

Afterwards, we followed our transition and allowed her to pick a restaurant to eat at to celebrate her birthday with the family. Due to all the schedule conflicts, today was the best day to go out to eat. We also went around the table and everyone shared some things that we were thankful to KiKi for. This also gives affirmation to one another and it reminds us that each person in the Kim family plays a significant role in being a blessing to one another.

Twitter Resurrection

It has been about a year since I signed up for my Twitter account. I have mostly used it to keep in touch with a handful of friends (some who are overseas). It has been a great way to just keep in touch with what is going on with our lives on a regular basis.

But the more I interact with people who are in blogosphere and the internet world, I realized that this is a great way to connect with people and network with new people in the internet world.

Even though I have my blog and my Facebook account, the thing I like about Twitter is the 3 C’s. It is: Concise, Convenient, and Consistent. The whole idea of only having 140 text space to type is a good thing. It keeps things concise and you really cannot blabber on (which some people have said that I have a tendency to do). Since, I always have my phone with me, I am able to conveniently update on what is going on in my life on a consistent basis.

I am going to try to stay connected with people this way and also allow people to stay connected to me. We will see how it goes as I open this up publicly. You can follow me through the day, week or month by adding me on:

If it gets too overwhelming then you will probably not hear from me… but you can also check my blog… haha!

Karissa’s Party

Karissa finally got to celebrate her birthday with some of her friends at Jump City – a premier inflatable indoor party zone. It is so different having a birthday party at Jump City with a bunch of girls compared to just boys. It is a bit calmer, but nevertheless it is chaotic with all the kids running around.

After they worked up a sweat from climbing up and sliding down inflatable slides, we celebrated KiKi’s birthday with a Coldstone cake and then opened up the presents.

It always brings a joy to the parents’ heart when their kids are happy and having a blast. What a day!

Josiah’s Soccer Team(s)

Josiah decided to play soccer, not only for the Vardar Ann Arbor club team but also for his school’s team. At first, Christina and I were a bit hesitant due to the increase of school work in middle school, his commitment to Velocity (our Junior High ministry), and other responsibilities.

But he wanted to play with some of his good friends from school, so we gave him the freedom to choose and hopefully through it he can learn about time management and balance.

Now the problem for Christina and me is trying to find the balance to juggle all the kids’ school events and extra-curricular activities. As the kids get older, it seems as if things get harder to find the balance. I can’t wait until the kids know how to drive :-)

DJ in Town

Yesterday, DJ Chuang came into town to spend a few days with us. He is a fellow networker, strategist and innovator, who has a great big heart for God’s Kingdom. DJ currently works with the L2 Foundation and also with Leadership Network.

It is always awesome to talk with guys who are constantly thinking about innovation and looking into the future.

After dinner, some of the leaders and I had an opportunity to sit down and just chat. We talked about various issues ranging from multi-ethnicity to how churches are using technology. We also discussed briefly about multi-site issues.

I’m looking forward to spending some more time with him today.

Bye Bye to Set Ups

Yesterday, at our Friday ACCESS gathering, it was our last time of setting up our band equipment at Angell Hall. It was a pretty moving moment as we have been a portable church for the last 12 years. I think the worship team got a bit misty eyed and nostalgic :-)

But I think they were more grateful and happy that they will not have to wake up early to set up or waste time breaking down the set up every week. This will give them more time to minister as they spend time with people in their LIFE Groups.

They got so nostalgic and filled with joy that they called me over to take a picture with them in this historical moment… haha!

Getting Closer Every Day

Now with 3 more days before the big inaugural celebration, we are trying our best to get everything ready. In football terms, it is 1st and goal and we are on the 10 yard line. It always takes great focus to bring the ball over for a touchdown.

It always boggles the average “sports watcher” why the team who is so close to the goal line cannot bring the ball over for the touchdown. Unless you have played sports, especially football it might not really make sense.

We have to keep in mind that when a football team is that close to the goal line, the opposing team is that much more determined not to allow the touchdown. Also, we have to remember that there is a heightened pressure on the offense, as the need for the score increases. There are other factors but the bottom line is that the last 10 yards is sometimes the hardest.

This is why everyone in our church needs to be focused. They need to be willing to put everything on the line in order to see the inaugural celebration become a reality.

The next 3 days will be busy and many people will have to sacrifice their time and energy to help get the Transformation Center ready. But we have some great people in our church and I am confident that we will be celebrating a victory on Sunday – another huge milestone for us.

Chairs for T-Center.JPG

These are the chairs that we need to place in the sanctuary once the renovations get finished. We are hoping the chairs will be in the sanctuary by Saturday.

We have purchased these chairs by faith. We started a project called, “Reserve-A-Seat.” We were asking the members in our church to purchase a seat for themselves, as well as to pray about purchasing a seat for one of their friends that they want to experience God in the T-Center.

At this point the purchased chairs are at 42%. We need the other 58% of the chairs to be purchased ASAP. Some of us have been joking around and saying that many people this Sunday will be sitting on chairs that are in debt.

If you are reading this and have not purchased a chair yet, you can click here and participate in the project of getting 360 chairs in the sanctuary.

Kids’ Are Back in School

Yesterday, the kids started school for this new year. Even though they had a half day, the reality of going back on a tight schedule hit all of us. The summer fun has ended and now we are back in business with academics and their other extra curricular activities.

After this week, Karissa will even be in school for the full day as she starts Kindergarten. Christina and I have been talking about how things will change even for us because she will now have more time to do other things. It is amazing how Christina was able to hold off on a lot of her dreams so that other people can achieve theirs – she has made a tremendous sacrifice.

Now we are talking about having more frequent morning dates with exercising together, a breakfast, and just spending time together. She has also mentioned about studying some more, volunteering or even getting a part-time job. I told her to take it easy and slow. The woman is truly excited! And I am so happy for her. It is really a new stage of our lives.

Covenant Retreat 2008

It was a great inaugural celebration (I will write more about it at a later time). Right after a time of fellowship, Pastor Ben took me to the airport so that I can head back to Ann Arbor. I am currently waiting for my connecting flight in Chicago’s O’Hare airport so that I can rush over to the Covenant’s married couples retreat.

It is encouraging to see more married couples in our church. It is a healthy sign of the church growing and going through various life stages. This year, we have the most number of couples coming out to the retreat – 20+ couples!

We have Phil and Barb Tiews coming to speak to us. They have been married for 36 years and they are both actively involved in ministry. It is going to be a great time of receiving words of wisdom from a couple who have gone through all the ups and downs of life.

Christina and I have always been convinced that when people have a strong marriage, then they will have a strong family. Then, if their families are strong, they will be able to impact their community. We are hoping that at this retreat marriages will be strengthened so that the ripples affects will go to their families and beyond.

New Encounter 2008

We had an awesome time at this year’s New Encounter. All the guys who prepared for the night did a great job of putting things together. They made it into a Top Ten show and Pastor Andrew was trying to be the Asian David Letterman :-)

I don’t know what it is but either I am getting a bit older or the new freshmen are getting a bit younger. But regardless, we were able to connect with one another and most importantly, connect with God.

It is always encouraging to see people from all different parts of the world coming to the University of Michigan. It is going to be another great year.

Reconnecting with Former My Youth Pastor

Yesterday, Pastor David Yang came to Ann Arbor to drop of his 2nd son for the start of the UM school year. It was great reconnecting with him. It is hard to believe that he was my youth pastor almost 20 years ago.

As were eating lunch, we were reminiscing about the past and we also talked about some of the various things that God was doing all over the world. I have always loved his heart for missions. There aren't too many people who have the Kingdom vision and heart - this is why it is always a joy to talk with men of God like Pastor Yang.

It is funny how everything comes to full circle. As he spent time with me when I was in his youth group, now his oldest son, Josh is at HMCC of Chicago and his 2nd son, Joe is starting as a freshman at the UM. I will now have the responsibility and the privilege of helping them grow in the Lord just as Pastor Yang helped me during my younger years.

I realized that one day, Christina and I will have to hand off our children to people that we have ministered to when they were younger. So we better minister to them well :-)

Contact Lens for Josiah

Yesterday, Josiah and Elliot went in to the eye doctor to get their eyes examined. After the exam, I found out that they both needed to get new eye prescriptions. I am always amazed at how eye doctors can be patience during the examination as they ask, “which is clearer… number 1 or number 2.”

Due to all the sports that Josiah plays, Christina and I decided to get him some contact lens. I remember getting my first pair during my freshmen year in high school. Now, a lot of the kids get them in 5th or 6th grade!

Josiah had a personal session with an optometrist assistant who walked him through the whole process of putting on the contact lens and taking them out. I forgot how hard it was when a person tries to put on contact lens for the very first time. But after some practice, he got use to it. Now, the man is ready to go.

OCR 2008

We are closing out the OCR training session tomorrow afternoon. So far, it has been a good OCR. I have been really enjoying our evening sessions of prayer. For some reason, this year more of our OCR participants are hungry and have higher expectations for God to do some incredible things.

Already some testimonies are coming out regarding some of the divine appointments that God has brought our way. Even at the International OCR (one week earlier), we had about 140 international students come out to the BBQ. For some reason, God is giving us favor with the international students. It is our prayer that they will experience God’s love so that they can be transformed and trained to go back to their countries with a greater mission and vision.

The various groups in our church are strategizing and praying to reach out to the undergraduate students who will be arriving in the next several days. It is exciting to see people coming together with a clear mission and focus.

We are praying for a great harvest of souls this year.

We believe that with the new facilities that God has given to us, we will be able to increase our reach to various people on campus, as well as in the city.

Tonight, we met in the basement of the Transformation Center to pray on location. It was a good feeling knowing that we were praying in the very place where God was going to do His transformative work in the lives of people. It gave us greater faith to pray.

The Suitcase Lifestyle Sermon

20080824 - The Suitcase Lifestyle.jpg

I will be sharing this one part sermon on longing for “home.” As many of you know, this summer has been filled with a lot of travel – pretty much I lived off a suitcase for weeks. When I was younger traveling was something that I loved to do. It fueled my adventure side. But now, as I am slowly getting older and have gotten the traveling bug out of me, I realized that I long to be home with my family more.

I think there are a lot of good analogies to the desire that we all have to want to be “home.” What would it be like if every single member at HMCC longed for heaven more (our real home)? What if every person knew that this world is just a bus stop before getting to our final destination?

More people would live differently if we really saw life in this way. Hope you can join us for this sermon.

Personal Retreat 2008

I am heading out for a couple of days for a personal retreat. There are a lot of things to pray through, especially in light of everything that is going on in our churches and the things that are to come this year.

I have been sharing with people that when we fail to take time to reflect and hear God’s voice, then we can completely miss God’s best for us. In this particular retreat, I am trying to pray through some decisions where God will need to increase my faith and trust in Him.

I am going to check out of the blogosphere for the next 4 days. I will try to update the blog when I get back.

Motorcycle Day of Destiny

Yesterday, before I headed back to Ann Arbor, I had the opportunity to meet up with my friends, Steve Lee, Peter Kim, and Dave Lee for a quick lunch. It was good to catch up with Steve one last time before they headed back out to Kenya.

Afterwards we went to Chicago Cycle to “just look” at some motorcycles. Christina simply called it, “feeding into my worldly desires.” Of course, I had to convince her that motorcycle riding can be very spiritual and beneficial to the longevity of my health.

It was awesome just learning about the various motorcycles. Since Steve, Peter and Dave all have experience with motorcycles, they were able to give me the 411 on the various bikes. It was just overwhelming to see 90,000 square feet of all motorcycles. You really have to come prayed up in order not to leave that place without a motorcycle.

As I was driving back, I was just thankful for the friendships with these brothers. It is hard to believe I knew them since 8th grade. God has really developed our friendships – not only are we able to have fun together but we are able to speak into each others’ lives. It is a rare combination but I take it as a gift from God. I am truly thankful.

We are fervently talking about all taking a coast-to-coast cruise together – kind of like the Wild Hogs movie. I can’t wait for that day.

An Incredible Conversion

Mosab Hassan Yousef - Hamas Son.jpg

Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a Hamas leader

I don’t know if you have heard about the conversion of Mosab Hassan Yousef from Islam to Christianity; but this is no ordinary conversion. Yousef is the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, one of the most influential leaders of the militant Hamas group in the West Bank.

Sheikh Hassan Yousef.jpg

Sheikh Hassan Yousef is in the middle

In a Fox News exclusive interview with Jonathan Hunt, Yousef shares how he came to faith in Christ and also shares some of his views on Islam and Hamas. Here are some excerpts:

JONATHAN HUNT: You speak from a unique perspective, a man who grew up not just in an Islamic family but as part of an organization seen by many people around the world as an extreme force in Islam: Hamas. What is the reality of Islam? You say people don't see the reality; What is the reality of Islam?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF: There are two facts that Muslims don't understand ... I'd say about more than 95 percent of Muslims don't understand their own religion. It came with a much stronger language than the language that they speak so they don't understand it ... they rely only on religious people to get their knowledge about this religion.

Second, they don't understand anything about other religions. Christian communities live between Muslims and they're minority and they (would) rather not to go speak out and tell people about Jesus because it's dangerous for them.

So, all their ideas about other religions on earth are from Islamic perspectives. So those two realities, most people don't understand.

If people, if Muslims, start to understand their religion – first of all, their religion – and see how awful stuff is in there, they'll start to figure out, this can't (be) ... because most religious people focus on certain points of Islam. They have many points that they are very embarrassed to talk about.

JONATHAN HUNT: What specific event or events began to change your mind about Islam?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
Since I was a child I started to ask very difficult questions, even my family was telling me all the time, 'You're a very difficult person and we were having trouble answering your questions. Why are you asking so many questions?' This was from the beginning, to be honest with you.

But I felt that everybody – and my father was a good example for me because he was a very honest, humble person, very nice to my mother, to us, and raised us on the principle of forgiveness, okay? I thought that everybody in Islam was like this.

When I was 18 years old, and I was arrested by the Israelis and was in an Israeli jail under the Israeli administration, Hamas had control of its members inside the jail and I saw their torture; (they were) torturing people in a very, very bad way.

JONATHAN HUNT: You talk about the good Muslims, like your father, yet you still now renounce the faith of your father. Could you have not been a good Muslim?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
Now, here's the reality: after I studied Christianity – which I had a big misunderstanding about, because I studied about Christianity from Islam, which is, there is nothing true about Christianity when you study it from Islam, and that was the only source.

When I studied the Bible carefully verse by verse, I made sure that that was the book of God, the word of God for sure, so I started to see things in a different way, which was difficult for me, to say Islam is wrong.

Islam is my father. I grew up for (one) father – 22 years for that father – and another father came to me and told me, 'I'm sorry, I'm your father.' And I was like, 'What are you talking about? Like, I have my own father, and it's Islam!' And the father of Christianity told me, 'No, I'm your father. I was in jail, and this (Islam) is not your father.'

So basically this is what happened. It's not easy to believe this (Islam) is not your father anymore. So I had to study Islam again from a different point of view to figure out all the mistakes, the huge mistakes and its effects, not only on Muslims – (of) which I hated the values ... I didn't like all those traditions that make people's lives more difficult – but its effects also on humanity. On humanity! People killing each other (in) the name of God.

So definitely I started to figure out the problem is Islam, not the Muslims and those people – I can't hate them because God loved them from the beginning. And God doesn't create junk. God created good people that he loved, but they're sick, they have the wrong idea. I don't hate those people anymore but I feel very sorry for them and the only way for them to be changed (is) by knowing the word of God and the real way to him.

JONATHAN HUNT: Does it worry you that in saying these things – and given your background and your words carrying extra weight – there is a danger that you will increase the difficulties, the hatred between Christians and Muslims in the world right now?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
This could happen if a Christian person will go talk to them about the reality of Islam. They put Christians on the enemy list anyway, before you talk to them about Islam. So if you go to them and tell them, as a Christian, they will be offended immediately and they will hate you and this will definitely increase the vacuum between both religions – but what made someone like me change?

Years ago, years ago, when I was there, God opened my eyes, my mind also, and I became a completely different person. So now, I can do this duty, while you as Christians can help me do it, but maybe you wouldn't be able to. (Muslims) have no excuse now.

JONATHAN HUNT: How difficult a process has this been for you to effectively walk away from your family, leave your home behind? How difficult is that?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
Taking your skin off your bones, that's what happened. I love my family, they love me. And my little brothers, they’re like my sons. I raised them. Basically, it was the biggest decision in my life.

I left everything behind me, not only family. When you decide to convert to Christianity or any other religion from Islam, it's not (enough) to just say goodbye and leave, you know? It's not like that. You're saying goodbye to culture, civilization, traditions, society, family, religion, God — what you thought was God for so many years! So it's not easy. It's very complicated. People think it's that easy, like it doesn't matter. Now I'm here in the U.S. and I got my freedom and it's great, but at the same time, nothing is like family, you know. To lose your family —

JONATHAN HUNT: Have you lost your family?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF: My family is educated and it was very difficult for them. They asked me many times, especially for the first two days, to keep my faith to myself and not go to the media and announce it.

But for me it was a duty from God to announce his name and praise him (around) the world because my reward is going to be that he's going to do the same for me. So I did it, basically, as a duty. I (wonder) how many people can do what I can do today? I didn't find any.

So, I had to be strong about that. That was very challenging. That was the most difficult decision in my life and I didn't do it for fun. I didn't do it for anything from this world. I did it only for one reason: I believed in it. People are suffering every day because of wrong ideas. I can help them get out of this endless circle ... the track the devil (laid) for them.

JONATHAN HUNT:
Aren't you terrified that somebody is going to try to kill you for saying these things — which would be approved of according to parts of the Koran?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF: They got to kill my ideas first, (and) that's it, they're already out. So how are they going to kill my idea? How are they going to kill the opinions that I have? ... They can kill my body, but they can't kill my soul.

JONATHAN HUNT: You're not afraid?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
As a human, you know, I can be very brave now, I'm not thinking about it at this moment and I feel that God is on my side. But if this will be the challenge, I ask God to give me enough strength.

I've been a Christian for a long time before they knew, or anyone knew. I love Jesus, I followed him for many years now. It wasn't a secret for most of the time, and this time I just did it to glorify the name of God and praise him.

They're not dealing with a regular Muslim. They know that I'm educated, they know that I studied, they know that I studied Islam and Christianity. When I made my decision, I didn't make it because someone did magic on me or convinced me. It was completely my decision.

JONATHAN HUNT:
What is your basic message to any Muslim listening to this right now?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF:
My message to them is, first of all, to open their minds. They were born to Muslim families – this is how they got Islam and this is just like ... any other religion, like growing up (in) a Christian family, or growing up (in) a Jewish family.

So my point is that I want those people to open their eyes, their minds, to start to understand and imagine that they weren't born for a Muslim family. And use their minds.

Why did God give them minds? Open their hearts. Read the Bible. Study their religion. I want to open the gate for them, I want them to be free. They will find a good life on earth just by following God – and they're also going to guarantee the other life.

Hopefully, just like the Apostle Paul, who miraculously converted to Christ, Yousef can channel all of his energies towards proclaiming the truth about Christ. Indeed, once we know the truth, the truth will set us free (Jn 8:32).

Covenant BBQ

It was great hanging out with some of the married couples in our church yesterday. Dr. Peter and Dr. Clara opened up their new home to all the Covenant groups in our church. Throughout this summer we have broken up into smaller group (3-4 couples) so that deeper relationships can be built.

But yesterday was the first time this summer that we all came together. Even though, we were from different small groups, it was awesome interacting with all of the other couples that we do not see as often.

We are looking forward to our retreat that is coming up during Labor Day weekend. It is our prayer that the married couples in our church will grow more intimate with the Lord and with one another.

We praise God for the growth of this ministry. It is a healthy sign that our church is growing in all the lifestages.

Blueberry Picking

This morning the family and I went to a blueberry farm. We have always enjoyed picking fresh fruit and then using them to make different dishes. Since one of the kids’ favorite fruit is blueberries, they like it in their pancakes and muffins.

As we were picking the blueberries there was a teaching moment with Karissa. She noticed that all the good blueberries were located deep in the blueberry bush. Karissa asked, “Daddy, why are all the good blueberries so hard to get?” I told her that some of the best things in life do not come easily. In fact, there are always obstacles and hardships that will come. This is why we always have to be focused, as we go through life with diligence and perseverance.

I don’t think she understood everything that I was trying to teach her, but she did appreciate where to find all the big, juicy blueberries.

I Need You Now

Smokie Norful is one of my favorite Gospel singers. There are Gospel singers and then there are “Gospel singers.” He doesn’t just sing a song, but many times Smokie uses the piano and his voice to prophetically communicate God’s promises and truth.

This morning as I was praying and getting ready for our Sunday Celebration, I was ministered to by his song, “I Need You Now.” Smokie said that this song was birthed out of pain and a crisis in his life. He said, “I was crying out to God and realizing my total dependence on Him, and ultimate victory through Him.”

For some reason this morning I am feeling a greater need for God like never before. In light of everything that is going on with our church (the purchase and renovation of our building) and the new season of ministry that is quickly approaching, the Spirit reminded me of the need for God’s Presence and Power in my life.

Smokie sang this song in a prophetic way that ministered, not only to me but to the people in the video (even T.D. Jakes had to get up and praise God). I would love to see more worship leaders, who are able to speak God’s truths spontaneously through the universal language of music, minister to God's people in power.

Check out the video.

Getting Back to Work

It is always hard to step back into the rhythm of things after a long trip halfway across the world. But coming home to a family that has missed you and with various things pressing for your immediate attention causes you to get focused.

Yesterday, I spent some time with the family. We all had the opportunity to update each other on what was happening in our lives. This is a habit that I want to build up in our home because it teaches the kids the importance of being involved with one another even though we were separated by distance.

One of the things that blessed me when I came back was the fact that so many people helped out with the renovation for the new office and the Transformation Center. Christina told me how my whole family helped pack all my books and things from the old office. Then some guys from the church helped move all the furniture and the books to the new office.

We are looking forward to moving our operations to the new Transformation Center office space. This reminded me that this is truly a team effort. We are going to get things ready for a harvest of people who will experience true transformation as they experience the Gospel.

Bowling with Family

As I am getting ready to go to Indonesia, I am trying to clear out my schedule so that I can spend more time with the family. The kids really wanted to go bowling so we made a trip out to the bowling alley.

Nothing beats $1 games on Tuesday afternoons.

This was a historic moment for KiKi because we bowled half of the game by herself – and she ended up marking a spare all by herself!

An Addition to the Jun Family

On Saturday early morning, Emanuel Jun was born. He came out healthy and the parents are doing well. Now, Andrew and Nickey are parents. Christina and I were talking how we remembered Nickey as a first year student at U of M, but now she is a mother.

It is such a great joy to see people in our church being raised up and going through the various stages of life.

It is exciting to see our church go through growth in the various lifestages. We are seeing more families coming out to our church, which has been a blessing. More babies are being born and children are filling up our Children’s Church. The single adults are slowly getting married. In the near future, we probably have to start up a senior citizen’s ministry (hopefully, I don’t have to lead that).

Congratulations Andrew and Nickey!

Wise Living Series

20080713 - Wise Living.jpg

We have started our new 6 part series called, “Wise Living.” It is amazing that there are incredible examples in the Bible of people who have lived foolishly and people who have lived wisely in the ways of the Lord. Depending how a person chose, their destinies were cemented.

We are constantly given choices to make. What we end up choosing sometimes determines where we will end up.

In the Bible we notice Moses challenging the Israelite people. He said, “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” (Dt 30:19-20).

Even, Joshua challenges the Israelite people, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” (Jos 24:15).

As we study the book of Proverbs, we want to learn how to choose to live the life of wisdom. This is the way of blessings.

HMCC Work Day

It was great to see all the people who came out to help for the church work day. Even though people were concerned about the rain, I realized that in retrospect that it was good a thing. Especially, for the people who were working on the lawn. The rain helped the soil to soften a bit and also it kept everyone cool.

I was so encouraged, not only to see all the people that showed up, but by the attitudes and the way people worked so diligently. It really gave me a glimpse of the power of unity.

We have made some great progress on the building and now we are trying to get some of the other renovations underway. The day of our new Transformation Center is quickly approaching.

Lifestyle Changes Sermon

20080706 - Lifestyle Changes.jpg

I think if there is something that we all want in our lives, it is “change.” But change in habits, attitudes, and our lifestyles do not come easily. This is why we usually start off well, but then we rarely find ourselves sticking to the commitments that we have made. Often, we find ourselves reverting back to who we really are. But is this what God wants for us?

I am looking forward to sharing the one part message about Lifestyle Changes. This is something that I had to personally go through in regards to my health. It is my prayer that through this sermon it will be a catalyst for us to take steps in the right direction towards our destiny.

Throughout this summer season we have been covering a lot of topics that deal with “transformation” and “challenges.” We are at a particular time in the history of our church where we are hungering for a greater change. I hope you can join us either live or via internet.

The July 4th 2008 Holiday

Today we ate at one of our favorite places for the breakfast - The Original Pancake House. Their Dutch Baby pancake is Christina’s and Karissa’s favorite. The boys and I love the corn beef hash. The men in the Kim household are very serious and particular about our corn beef hashes.

Afterwards, the boys and I played some baseball. We ended up losing one of our baseballs in the bushes. But as we were looking for the ball (which we did not find), we found 5 other baseballs. As we were coming home, the boys mentioned how it was good that we lost our ball because we ended up finding 5 others instead. I was so encouraged to see that the boys learned a life lesson about perspective and having positive attitudes.

Then for dinner we headed out to Pastor Andrew and Nickey’s place. It was good spending time with them in a non-ministry setting and just building our relationship. We ended the day by waiting for the sun to go down and the night to fall. By 9:30PM it was dark enough for us to light the sparklers. We lit 6 boxes full of sparklers!

$2.1 Million to Eat with Someone?

I was reading an article the other day that caught my attention, not only because it dealt with Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world but that there was someone who was willing to pay $2.1 million dollars to just have lunch with him. Is this crazy or what?!

Zhao Danyang, a Chinese investment fund manager won a bid on eBay, which happened to be the most expensive charity auction held to date. Buffett have been auctioning off lunches online in order to support the Glide Foundation. Last year, the winning bid was for $650,100.

The bids supposedly go so high because Buffett is not only a well-sought after man but he only offers one lunch a year. Most business people would be willing to pay this kind of price because they value the importance of being able to “pick his brain” about his investment philosophy and his success in the financial world.

I was just thinking, how much am I willing to pay, in order to have a lunch with someone that I wanted to learn from. I guess having the person’s full attention in order to pick their brain and to have them impart things to you is probably priceless.

You can read the full article here.

Chilling with Family 08.06.30

It is always a joy to come back from a conference or my travels to just hang out with the family. I received a warm welcome by KiKi. She said, “Welcome back daddy to the Kim family… please come on in!” These are the precious years.

We ended up grilling some hamburgers and bratwursts today. Then afterwards we ended up getting the old school Indiana Jones movie (can't believe it was made in 1981) together with some sundaes. Nothing beats it.

Now it is back to the rhythm of life until the next trip.

Illustration from the Sports World

Not too long ago, I received an e-mail from an alumnus. This person was sharing about an insight they received about the church from the sports world. I have always said that some of the best illustrations for biblical principles and even comparisons are found in sports.

After reading the e-mail I was so blessed that I ask this person if I could posted it on my blog. This is what they wrote:

Hi Pastor Seth,

I had a realization the other day through watching the movie "High School Musical" that I wanted to share with you. At the end of the movie everyone was singing a song with the lyrics "We're all in this together", and at that moment it dawned on me how being an athlete on a team is similar to being a member in the church.

On a team there is a coach who teaches the team skills, disciplines the team when necessary, and tries to think of new game plans and plays to improve the team. There is a captain who leads the team by example, who is the communication line between the coach and players, and who helps motivate the team and keep the team together, and then there are the players who are not the captain but without them there would be no team and no game because there wouldn't be enough players to play.

Last night, I saw how this relates to the church in that the pastor is like the coach: he teaches the church members the Word of God, disciplines and rebukes the church when its people go astray, and seeks God for revelations and tries to come up with innovations to stay current with society and to keep on growing. The leaders are like the captains: they lead by example and are the communication line between the pastor and members. And the members who are not leaders are like the other players on the team: they are necessary to make up the church and there would be no church without them.

I then thought of the saying, "There is no 'I' in Team," and I realized this is also true in the church. On a team everyone works together for the good of the team, or at least they should work together for the good of the team. When I played on the University of Michigan Water Polo team, which is Div I, I wasn't the best player. I was maybe third string and everyday at practice I was called upon to fill in positions wherever there was a need. For example, when a goalie was injured, I would play goalkeeper even if my position was not a goalkeeper. Back then I saw myself as a "practice dummy" and got bitter and felt I was being treated unfairly. I felt I was better than some of the players who received playing time and I was angry that my coach didn't give me a chance and let me play my position to improve my skills. Sometimes I got so angry that I did not put out 100% during practices. But now when I think about it, I was being selfish when I got bitter and angry; I was thinking only about myself and not about the team. Playing the role as someone who filled in positions during practices didn't earn me any stars or accolades, but it helped the team get better, which, if I was a team player, should have made me happy and excited. Being on a sports team, my mindset should have been, "If this helps the team, then I'll gladly do it." And just like on a team, in the church, if I really desire to live for God's glory and build His kingdom, then I should be happy and excited with whatever role I play, and my mindset should be, "If this helps build God's kingdom, then I'll gladly do it."

When I played water polo, I was selfish and proud, and this has carried over to my role in the church. Honestly, I get jealous and sometimes it's hard to rejoice when others are rejoicing and sometimes I feel I'm more spiritual than some of the Christians who are leaders, which all leads to bitterness and me not putting out 100%. This needs to change. I need to change. I need to be a team player. I need to think about the good of the church and focus on building it up, and I believe I am slowly changing with God's help.

As Christians called to make disciples of all nations, spread the glory of God, and fight this battle of the faith, we're all in this together. Every role is important. The pastor (who is like the coach), the leaders (who are like the captains), and the members (who are like the players) are all important. There is no "I" in team and there is no "I" in church. We all must work together for the good of the church, that is, the Bride of Christ.

Gosh, it was so exciting having this realization! Now I just need to act on it.

Die-Hard and Faithful Cubs Fan

It dawned upon me recently as I was talking with my family that I have been a Chicago Cubs fan for 31 years. It is hard to believe! I still have a picture of myself when I was in grade school with a Chicago Cubs hat, shirt and jacket.

It is hard to describe a die-hard Cubs fan. They are a bit crazy. They know what disappointment feels like… they know the pain of dashed hopes… they know the name of Steve Bartman (on a side note: it was NOT his fault).

Now that we live in Michigan, it is hard to convince my kids that they should be a Cubs fan. The Detroit Tigers are constantly beckoning to them and it doesn’t help when we have some hardcore Tigers fan in our church. But I am doing everything within my powers to show them “the way.”

I am hoping that this will be the year!

Brickworld Exhibit

We are spending a few days in Chicago before we head back to Ann Arbor. We found out about an exhibit that Brickworld was sponsoring. I believe it is one of the largest Lego exhibition in the States. Therefore, on Saturday we decided to check it out.

They had some incredible Lego creations. They were literally awe-inspiring. You can see all the intricacies and details that go into making a design. The kids loved it.

Here are a few pictures from our mini-vacation with our family and some other close pastors’ family. It was a great time of reconnecting and seeing all the kids play together.

We are still waiting for all the pictures that Dr. Steve took. I think he took close to about 4,000 pictures... he was a photo-machine.

Back From the Break

Our family and five other pastors’ family got back yesterday from spending a few days together in Wisconsin. It was great to hang out with friends that I have known since college; and for some of them, I have known since high school. We were like one big happy family!

It is a great joy seeing our kids playing together and growing up together. In our generation we have built some great bonds of friendship and hopefully, in their generation, they will be able to continue the friendship with one another. Maybe if some of them marry one another then we will have more generations :-)

Afterwards, some of the families went to see Kung Fu Panda. I think it was just as hilarious for the parents as it was for the kids. Then we finished off our time together with Chinese foods – the power of movie influence… ha!

Then this morning I flew back to Ann Arbor for our new property title signing. We were gathering in a conference room of the title company and all representatives from the parties were there. It was great meeting the vice-president of National City bank in Ann Arbor.

I don’t know how many papers I signed today, but all I can say is that it was a lot. Now the property is officially ours and we are doing our best to get it ready by the new season of ministry. It was my first time seeing seven digits on a check… it was pretty crazy seeing that much money being transferred in just 20 minutes.

Now I am at the airport getting ready to head back to Chicago to rejoin with my family. We will staying in Chicago for a few more days to spend time with our extended families. I will also be ministering at HMCC of Chicago.

Birthday and Father’s Day

Today was an extra bonus day. The family and I celebrated not only my birthday but also Father’s Day. I am truly an undeserving man – not only has the Lord blessed me with life but with an awesome family who love me and care for me. My kids each ended up making and writing separate birthday cards for me. It was moving to read what they expressed from their hearts. They are precious.

During Sunday Celebration today, the moms in the church read a thank you card for their husbands. When Christina read her card out loud to me, it almost made me cry… I definitely had some “misty eye action” going on.

Then later in the afternoon, the family and I celebrated together with a cake and the opening of presents. Afterwards, Christina and I went out to a nice fine-dining restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor. We love this place, especially for their filet mignon. The best part of it is that they give 50% off on your total bill on your birthday! Even better is when you actually end up making money because we didn’t used all the money on the gift certificate that someone in our church gave to us.

Today was an awesome day! I am truly blessed.

Jon and Rebecca’s Wedding

It was great to have the privilege of doing Jon and Rebecca’s wedding yesterday. This is probably our first inter-racial marriage (outside of the pan-Asian ethnicity) in our church. It was awesome to see how they were able to go “transcultural” and unite together because of Christ.

It was also great to see all the old faces, as well as some of the other single adults in our church. Pastor Andrew and Nickey were stuck at the pastors’ table with Christina and me. It was good hanging out with them in a non-ministry context.

Jon and Rebecca had their wedding at The Henry Ford Museum. It was a phenomenal place to have a wedding. We were able to walk around and see some of the famous cars that made history. The original bus that Rosa Parks protested on was on display and even the actual car that President Kennedy was shot in was also on display. It was as if history stood still.

It is exciting to see more married couples making up the composition of our church. As we are now growing in breadth in our ministry, we have to keep on growing in depth.

Renovation Sermon Series

20080615 - Renovation.jpg

The topic of change and transformation has been coming up a lot in my meetings with people. I have also been personally reflecting a lot on this topic as well. I think all of us in our honest moments would confess that we are not where we want to be. There are areas of our lives where we need more transformation.

We need a real renovation of our mind, heart, and will.

This is why I am excited about starting this new 3-part sermon series, “Renovation.” The other pastors and I will be addressing about how our mind, heart and will need some major renovating if we are serious about transformation.

This series will correlate with what we have been covering for the last month and half on Sundays about “Taking Up the Challenge” and “The Call to Leadership”.

There are so many things coming up for us on the horizon for us as a church that we want to make sure that we are doing the hard work of getting prepared. Join us for this new series either live or on the internet.

Boys’ Hang Time

Yesterday, the boys and I hung out together, while Christina and Karissa went out. I like it when it is just the boys day/night out. For some reason, we feel like we have a license to eat more unhealthy and do more crazy stuff as just the guys… I don’t know what it is :-)

We first went to a local Starbucks to read and take care of things. As the boys were reading, I worked on some e-mails. Then we went out for some good Chinese food. Afterwards, the boys got their haircut and we went home to watch the Euro 2008 soccer tournament.

We watched the games while eating beef jerky – nothing beats it! The day came to an end when the ladies came home.

How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?

Type A personalities always see sleep as a necessary evil. With so much to do, the thought of sleeping part of their day away does not seem like a good use of time. But we all know that sleep does play a part in our mood and our effectiveness throughout the day.

But how much sleep do we really need?

People have argued that it is different for people. Awhile back, I discovered that my sleep cycle is about 1.5 hours, which means that I can get 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5 hours and feel fairly refreshed. But still, I felt extremely tired throughout the day. Over the years, I just began to accept my tiredness as part of my lifestyle until I discovered that I had sleep apnea. This made me more conscious of the importance of sleep.

I am still trying to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night but it is not always easy to do with my schedule and other things going on in my life. But Christina is doing everything possible to help me remain faithful to this discipline of sleeping early and getting up early.

Daniel Kripke, co-director of research at the Scripps Clinic Sleep Center in La Jolla, California, has discovered that the ideal amount of sleep is about 6.5 hours to about 7.5 hours a night. The research shows that people who get this amount of sleep tend to live the longest!

What is even more fascinating is that people who get 8 hours or more, or less than 6.5 hours don’t live quite as long. Incredible!

You can read the whole TIME magazine article here.

As I am trying to keep up with my health (exercising and eating more healthy), I have to definitely consider sleep as one of those components that will need to be incorporated in my lifestyle change.

Elliot’s Tee-Ball Season

Elliot started up his tee-ball season again. His class decided to form a team and play together. I realized that at this age, the people that you play with is more important and anything else.

I took Josiah and Karissa with me to watch his game. Afterwards, we celebrated together with some ice cream. Nothing beats ice cream after a baseball game.

Mustache for Ministry

Pastor Dave Lee from Harvest Community Church in Chicago is growing a mustache! When I first saw him at the airport, I was like… “what the?” I was thinking that maybe he was trying to sport a new style or something (maybe the 70’s were coming back). But he told me that it was a fundraiser for a ministry that they have for at-risk inner-city kids. They are suppose to grow it out for 6-weeks and try to find people who would donate to the ministry.

So far here at the conference in Dallas it has been a source of conversation as well as the brunt of the joke. But the man is taking everything in stride… it is truly for the Gospel.

It is just a creative way to raise awareness and funds for an awesome ministry that they are doing. It is truly inspiring – but not enough to mimic it :-)

You can read up on it here.

If you want to see the last 5 weeks of growth, click here. Pastor Dave’s progression picture is on the bottom.

The Tradition Lives On

Magic and Bird.jpg        Kobe and Garnett.jpg

The NBA Finals are going to be pretty exciting, now that it is determined that the Lakers and the Celtics will be playing. When I was younger I grew up with the Lakers and Celtics competing against one another. The old school lineup for the Celtics had Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Danny Ainge, and Dennis Johnson. For the Lakers, they had, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Byron Scott, and Michael Cooper. The list goes on and on. They were both great dynasties.

But the great match up was against Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. They will definitely go down as one of the best rivalries in sports. It started back in the 1979 NCAA Championship game against Magic’s Michigan State University team and Bird’s Indiana State team. And as they say, “the rest is history.”

Now with the NBA Finals against the Lakers and Celtics again, it is conjuring up some great memories of old. It is going to be awesome!

Also, the Cubbies are on a 6-game winning streak and they are in first place in the National League Central Division. Hmm… can this be the year?!

Josiah’s 11th B-Day

We, as a family had fun today celebrating Josiah’s 11th birthday. In line with our family tradition Josiah picked a restaurant he wanted to go to and an activity that he wanted to do. You know that a kid has acquired and developed a taste for good food when he requests paella for his birthday. We went to one of the best places in metro Detroit.

As we were eating, we all went around did our tradition thing of having each of the family members go around and share something about the birthday person. We usually share how and why our lives are blessed to have the birthday person in our lives.

Then for an activity, Josiah picked watching The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian on the big screen. Elliot tried really hard to convince Josiah to do something more active like video game at Chuck E. Cheese or glow golf. But Josiah decided on Prince Caspian. I think having finished reading the books in the Narnia series helped spark a desire to see the movie.

By the time we finished everything and heading out on the long trek back to Ann Arbor, it was late. Christina and I washed up the kids and quickly put them to sleep. I think it was a great day for Josiah.

Married Couples Hang Out

In our married couples’ ministry, we meet up every week to experience biblical community. I realized that it is not easy to get married couples to gather together every week for small group, but it has been a blessing to see so many couples in our church commit to meeting together (Heb 10:25).

Out of the four weeks in a month, we use one meeting to just fellowship – translation: As we get older it is easier to just become homebodies, therefore we provide avenues for married couples to hang out and just chill together.

All the married couples’ small groups in our church do separate things. But once in awhile, we try to get all the married couples in our church together to fellowship.

Tonight for our small group activity, we decided to just eat together at bd’s Mongolian Barbeque. We had great food and great conversation. It was another way for us to connect together and to strengthen our marriages. Then some of them went over someone’s house to watch the game(s) – Redwings and Pistons.

Diane’s B-Day

Yesterday was my older sister’s b-day. We weren’t planning for it, but it just happened that my younger brother was coming in to Chicago from L.A. because of a wedding and I was here preaching for HMCC of Chicago so we decide to have dinner all together as a family. It was a special treat for us because as we are getting older, it is getting harder to have our whole family come together.

I think my parents enjoyed the moment of having all their children together.

We treated her to Wildfire Restaurant, which is an awesome place for steak and seafood. We ended up getting things from the family style menu, which is an all encompassing meal with starters and desserts. Therefore, when they served up the cake, it was a hard choice to decide which dessert to eat… it really was a struggle, no really it was :-)
