Sessions with Reggie McNeil

Wow! There are just some people who stretch your mind and challenge you in such a way that it is refreshing – Reggie McNeil is one of those guys. The sessions with him have been top-notched. I wish all our church members were here to listen to this man. He is one of the better communicators that I have heard, especially on the topic of the missional church.

He has a sharp edge about him (blunt and straight forward) that is buffered by a great sense of humor. I guess this is what a person needs especially when they talk about future things, which always makes the Church uncomfortable.

Here are some thought provoking principles that McNeil that talked about:

1) The Church being external vs. internal. He addressed the whole missional church concept – the Church of Jesus has to go beyond the walls. It was an affirmation of our 2 year theme of “the church beyond the walls.” The attractional church days are slowly fading and we need to be more incarnational.

2) The Church being people-development vs. program-driven. We need to get to a point in our church where we are helping people develop in their relationship with Christ rather than just giving them a cookie-cutting program to experience life transformation. The program-driven church has fueled the fire for the consumer-minded church.

3) The Church being apostolic era leadership vs. church-based leadership. Apostolic leadership is driven by vision and values. They always have the bigger picture in mind, while the church-based leadership is concerned about positions and titles. The apostolic church operates under the preparation modality rather than the planning modality. The preparation mindset gets people ready for what is to come in the future. This is what we need to see more of in the churches today.

These three shifts are already occurring and the Church has to line up with them in order to be a part of what God is doing around the world.

Meeting Up with Friends

One great thing about this conference is the opportunity to reconnect with friends and relationships that have been built up over the years. There were two brothers that I have met in India who are here at this conference. It was great to spend some time with them.

God is doing some things in India. The Indian population will supersede China’s population soon and the number of unreached peoples is growing. The need is great but there are many capable people making a difference in Mumbai as well as in the northern part of India.

It is great to know that there are Kingdom workers on the field. I met George Chavanikamannil in my doctoral class. We were two unlikely people to connect since he was the oldest in the class and I was the youngest; but our heart for church planting and God’s Kingdom brought us together.

I met Anson Thomas several years ago when we went to Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). He was (and still is) involved in rescuing some of the women (especially the young girls) who are forced to sell their bodies in the brothels. Anson has a heart for evangelism like none other. It is always refreshing to be around him.

It was good to spend some time with George… affectionately known as Uncle George.

Anson decided to go to Greenwich Village to preach the Gospel instead of the NYC tour – crazy and inspiring!

Platinum is Better Than Gold

I was waiting for Christina to arrive from Ann Arbor last night. But she kept on calling from the airport saying that the flight was delay due to a fuel leak. Then towards the start of the summit, she called again and said that the pilot could not fly because he has reached the maximum number of hours he can fly within a day.

She mentioned that all the passengers began to cuss and scramble (for the record, Christina did not choose the former, but definitely the latter). When she called me, I quickly called a direct elite line for Platinum Northwest members, I told them the situation and then the agent put her on the next flight. This gained some brownie points with Christina – this one moment neutralized all my travels throughout this year :-)

Christina finally arrived, albeit that it was right after the worship time was over. Even though she missed the opening session, I am glad that she is here with me.

First Night of the Summit

Yesterday, all throughout the morning we had the ordination and licensure candidate interviews. It brought back a lot of memories for me. I remember going through my ordination interview – it was pretty nerve racking. I wanted to make sure that I did not do what some of the older pastors did to me – but it was tempting.

We started off the evening with a great time of worship and then Pastor Keith gave a message that was appropriate for AMI. We were encouraged and reminded of the importance of the Ephesians 4:11-13 passage all throughout history. Now, today we need to fully have some of these gifts released in the church.

This morning we are going to hear from Reggie McNeil. I am pretty pumped for this.
